Choose a colorful, medium scale print fabric for your border then start collecting small scale or solid-reading coordinating fabrics for the blocks and cornerstones.  Block backgrounds should be light to maximize contrast; use one fabric or make it scrappy.   Use a single, different background for the sashing.
